Using power outage to rationalize local fuel consumption in Egypt is common news; however, this year power shortages have begun much earlier than the expected summer months.

The Ministry of Petroleum announced, last Thursday, its responsibility for last week’s outages, citing maintenance issues in some fields in the Western Desert and the Mediterranean that affected the flow of gas to some power plants.

Egypt earmarks 65 percent of its total natural gas production to electricity generation, which translates to 3.23 bcf out of 5.03 bcf. In addition to the consumption of 26,000 tons of fuel oil per day as a needed aid to production feedstock.
