Egypt will upgrade its smart electricity meters to enhance their security, according to the Head of the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), Mohamed Mousa, reports Egypt Independent.
The meters, according to Mousa, record personal information, making it necessary to ensure their security.
Mousa indicated that the NREA has partnered with an unidentified company to enhance consumers’ privacy protections. He stated “[t]here is a company affiliated to this sovereign body … assigned to keep the customer’s information that appears on the meter ‘secret.’”
The smart electricity meters were installed to empower consumers to track their consumption and to simplify payments and use, according to Egypt Independent.
