Petronas company announced that its subsidiary PETRONAS Gas & New Energy Sdn Bhd (PGNESB) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ENEOS Corporation (ENEOS) to jointly develop a competitive, clean hydrogen supply chain between Malaysia and Japan and to explore other hydrogen opportunities, a press release issued by PETRONAS stated.

According to the MoU, the two parties will search for conducting technical-commercial joint-study of a hydrogen supply chain including hydrogen production and its transportation in methylcyclohexane (MCH) form.

In addition, the two companies will cooperate on finding ways for low carbon hydrogen production from PETRONAS’ petrochemical facilities as well as for producing green hydrogen from renewable energy in the future.

In this regard, PETRONAS Gas + New Energy Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, Adnan Zainal Abidin, said: “We are proud to expand our three-decade long energy partnership with ENEOS to include hydrogen, on top of what we have established in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) space. More importantly, this partnership is a testament of how industry collaboration can help accelerate our shared aspiration towards a low carbon future.”

“With emerging clean energy sources like hydrogen, innovation and collaboration with partners in technological development are key, as they contribute towards achieving cost competitiveness and scalability for wider use across businesses and industries,” Abidin added.

This project will be funded from the Japanese Government’s Green Innovation Fund which sponsors decarbonization projects and initiatives.
