French energy company TotalEnergies has signed agreements to acquire a 30% operated interest in the Lang Lebah and B14 offshore gas fields in Malaysia, the company said on November 2.
The interests are currently held by Malaysian company PETRONAS Carigali (PCSB), Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC).
The fields, located off Sarawak, will be developed as an integrated project to unlock more than 6.5 Tcf of gas resources, equivalent to over 1 Bn barrels of oil equivalent (Bboe), according to TotalEnergies.
The development is expected to deliver a production plateau of around 10 bcm/y to supply Malaysia LNG’s existing liquefaction plant and meet growing demand for LNG in Asia.
The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals. Upon completion, TotalEnergies will operate both fields with a 30% stake, while PTTEP and KUFPEC will each hold 25% and PETRONAS Carigali will hold the remaining 20%.
TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said the project would establish another large-scale gas hub in Malaysia by leveraging shared infrastructure.
He added that the agreements would strengthen the company’s integrated gas position in the country, following its acquisition of SapuraOMV in 2024 and expansion of its partnership with PETRONAS in 2025.
TotalEnergies has operated in Malaysia since 1985 and became the country’s third-largest gas producer following its acquisition of SapuraOMV Upstream. The company holds interests in offshore blocks off Sarawak and Sabah.
