The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity started studying the feasibility of increasing the capacity of the electricity connection with Jordan to reach 1000 MegaWatt (MW), compared to the currently exchanged 450 MW, sources at the ministry told Al Borsa News.
A committee has been formed including members from the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to prepare the studies in cooperation with representatives from the Jordanian Energy Ministry.
The two countries agreed on boosting the capacity to 1000 MW in the first phase, and to continue increasing the capacity until allowing the exchange of 2000 MW in the second phase.
Forming the committee aims to identify the financial and operational commitment of each side, the time-frame needed for execution and setting the standards for choosing the companies contributing in the project.
Egyptian and Jordanian energy firms are seeking forming joint ventures to contribute in the expansion project, the sources said.
