Badawi, Esmat Discuss Joint Strategy to Secure Summer Energy Supply

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources reviewed their joint summer work plan, which was designed to address an anticipated 8% increase in peak electrical demand compared to the previous year. The two Ministers and executive leadership evaluated operational plans designed to secure natural gas and equivalent fuel supplies, protect the continuity of the national unified grid, and prevent outages during high-consumption periods, noted a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR).

Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, confirmed that the ministry’s implementation of new operating patterns that optimized fuel efficiency successfully dropped traditional fuel consumption to less than 170 grams per kilowatt. He added that ongoing infrastructure upgrades remain on schedule to tie 2,200 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacities and 1,300 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage systems into the national grid during the current year. These integration measures seek to maximize the yield of conventional plants while accelerating Egypt’s long-term transition away from fossil fuels.

Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, stated that the state’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) import infrastructure is operating at high efficiency, using floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) to inject imported LNG directly into the national natural gas grid. This system functions in parallel with local natural gas fields and leverages the strategic storage and re-pumping capabilities of the Damietta LNG plant. These measures build directly upon strategies established last year, when the combined grid successfully managed an unprecedented historic peak load of 40,000 MW.

In May 2026, Badawi declared that preparations for Summer 2026 are progressing in full coordination with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to secure the fuel and natural gas supplies for power plants, ensuring a stable electricity supply without outages.

In tandem with these operational preparations, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy addressed public speculation regarding utility pricing. Mansour Abdel Ghani, Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, clarified during a televised broadcast on MBC Masr’s “Al-Hekaya” program that the committee responsible for setting electricity prices has not issued any new decisions regarding household consumption tariffs.

Abdel Ghani dismissed recent claims of an upcoming general electricity price hike starting July 1 as unfounded. However, he pointed out that an increase of up to 20% will be applied exclusively to certain high-consumption commercial and service activities, restricted solely to peak operating hours.
