President Donald Trump announced the impose of several new tariffs to strengthen the international economic position of the US and protect American workers excluding the energy and certain mineral goods that are not available in the country, according to the White House statement.
President Trump will impose an individualized reciprocal higher tariff on the countries with which the US has the largest trade deficits. All other countries will continue to be subject to the original 10% tariff baseline, the statement explained.
It noted that these tariffs will be effective in April 9, 2025.
Additionally, Trump exempted from these tariffs the steel/aluminum articles and autos/auto parts which already subject to Section 232 tariffs, copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber articles; all articles that may become subject to future Section 232 tariffs and bullion.
