US President Donald Trump said that the US could remain involved in Iran and retain access to its oil, drawing a comparison with the US energy deal in Venezuela.

According to Reuters, Trump said the US would eventually leave Iran unless it decided to remain and take control of the country’s oil resources, similar to its approach in Venezuela.

The remarks come as turmoil in the Middle East continues to disrupt global oil markets. Traders expect oil prices to rise again following an attack on a major Saudi oil pipeline.

Trump said the US would only agree to a deal with Iran if it considered the terms favorable. He also claimed that Iran had been repeatedly seeking peace talks, although Tehran has previously rejected such claims.

Referring to the US agreement with Venezuela announced in August, Trump said revenues from Venezuela had more than covered the cost of the war.

During his visit to Ireland, Trump reiterated his expectation that the war with Iran would end before the end of the year. He said an agreement could potentially come shortly after the US midterm elections in November.
