Saudi Arabia to Build First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Fueling Station

Saudi Aramco and Air Products announced signing an agreement to build the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle fueling station, Saudi Aramco announced on January 25.

The two companies are jointly operating the project as Air Product will participate with its technological knowledge to supply the vehicles with the compressed hydrogen, and Aramco will lead the project industrially.

“The use of hydrogen derived from oil or gas to power fuel cell electric vehicles represents an exciting opportunity to expand the use of oil in clean transport,” Ahmad O. Al Khowaiter, Saudi Aramco’s Chief Technology Officer said.

Aramco and Air Products will construct a pilot fleet, in which the high-purity compressed hydrogen will be dispensed at the new fueling station. During this phase, the collected data will provide an assessment for the future implementation of this technology.

The station, the first of its kind in the kingdom, will be located within the grounds of Air Products world-class Technology Center in the Dhahran Techno Valley Science Park and is expected to be operated in the second quarter (Q2) of 2019.
