Aramco Expands Overseas Oil Storage, Explores New Export Routes

Saudi Aramco is expanding its overseas oil storage capacity and evaluating additional crude export routes to strengthen supply security amid shipping disruptions and constraints affecting the Strait of Hormuz, according to President and CEO Amin Nasser.

Nasser’s statements came during the 25th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) in Riyadh where he said the company was coordinating with the Saudi energy ministry to assess alternative export routes

“Until the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens and confidence returns, pressure on the energy supply chain will intensify,” Nasser said.

Global onshore commercial oil inventories have fallen below six billion barrels, which Nasser described as the “last line of defense” against supply disruptions, Asharq reported.

He said existing inventories no longer provide a sufficient buffer or a lasting solution for energy security, highlighting the need to strengthen infrastructure, supply chains, and export routes rather than rely on inventory drawdowns during crises.

Nasser also stressed that resilience cannot be achieved through a single pipeline, facility, technology, or capability. Instead, he said, Aramco’s strength lies in a multilayered system developed before crises emerge.

Aramco is Saudi Arabia’s state-controlled oil producer and one of the world’s largest integrated energy and chemicals companies. The company invests in oil and natural gas production, processing infrastructure, and digital technologies.
