GPC Announces Oil Discovery in Egypt’s Western Desert

Tahrir al- Zafzaf, Chairman of the GPC, announced last Friday a discovery in the Abu Senan area in the western desert.

Excavation began in the area last January according to Zafzaf,

“Recoverable reserves of this exploration are estimated at 2.2 million barrels of oil from the upper marine layer and about 11 billion cubic feet of gas from Abu Rawash sand layer (G),” commented Zafzaf.

“Electrical stability tests in Abu Senan have revealed the presence of hydrocarbon-rich layers,” he added.

According to the statement, this discovery is a “special” one, due to its geological structure. The discovery will probably encourage the GPC to dig several wells in areas with similar geological layers in hopes of boosting Egypt’s current production of 685,000 barrels/day.
