Egypt, UK Affirm Commitment to Boosting Cooperation in Petroleum, Mining Sectors

On the sidelines of the International Mining Conference, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi held talks with the United Kingdom (UK) Industry Minister Sarah Jones where they affirmed the commitment of the two countries to boost cooperation in oil and mining sector.

Badawi stressed the pivotal role played by leading British companies such as bp, Shell and Harbour Energy in supporting and developing the Egyptian energy sector.

He also expressed his keenness to expand this successful cooperation to include the mining sector, referring to the successes achieved during Egypt’s participation in the British Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) events in the UK which he chaired in December 2024.

Additionally, the meeting discussed Egypt’s plans to update its mining strategy. Badawi referred to the Sukari gold mine as a model for successful partnerships, expressing the ministry’s aspiration to replicate this model.

He also reviewed the efforts made in phosphate exploration and production, and explained that regulatory amendments are underway to attract more investments, in addition to developing a digital platform to display and market investment opportunities in the Egyptian mining sector.

Jones reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting ongoing cooperation and extended an invitation for Egypt to participate in Minerals Week, scheduled to take place in London next October.

She also highlighted the opportunity to leverage British expertise in technology, finance, and education to enhance human capacity building in Egypt’s mining sector. In this context, the discussion explored potential collaboration between the British Geological Survey and the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA) in the areas of training and skills development.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for the UK’s Minister to visit Egypt and attend the Egypt Mining Forum (EMF), set to be held in July 2025. This would pave the way for further discussions and agreements aimed at strengthening partnerships.
