Egypt, Saudi Arabia Explore Cooperation in Energy Efficiency

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with a delegation from the Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy headed by Ahmed bin Musa Al-Zahrani, the Assistant Minister of Energy for Development and Excellence, where they discussed the ways of launching strategic cooperation and integration in the field of energy efficiency between the two countries.

They also discussed the expansion of applying the best measures and practices to rationalize energy consumption within the framework of achieving the Egypt goals for the optimal use of energy resources and reducing its import bill.

During the meeting, Badawi stressed that the MoPMR is keen to expand energy efficiency improvement projects, as it is one of the main pillars of its strategy, which works according to an integrated approach with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to form the optimal energy use mix in Egypt.

He explained the positives impact of maximizing energy efficiency measures in Egypt which will achieve savings and reduce the import bill for fuel, in addition to reducing carbon emissions.

Additionally, Badawi expressed his aspiration to quickly launch the Egyptian-Saudi cooperation initiative in the field of improving energy efficiency in Egypt soon. He also pointed out the availability of great technical capabilities in the petroleum sector through Egyptian petroleum companies specialized in engineering, technical and technological works.

From his side, Al-Zahrani, expressed Saudi desire to cooperate with its brothers in Egypt to transfer the Kingdom’s successful experience in improving energy consumption efficiency, which began in 2012.

Also, the Saudi side gave an elaboration on the experience of developing and implementing a national program for energy efficiency and how It succeeded in achieving its primary goal of overcoming the challenges of increasing energy consumption in the Kingdom and placing it among the countries with the lowest energy density in the world and the highest efficiency in its use.

The parties concluded the meeting by agreeing to promptly initiate joint efforts to launch the Egyptian-Saudi cooperation initiative. This initiative aims to enhance energy consumption efficiency in Egypt, provide technical support and expertise, and develop a national program with a scientific, practical methodology and specific implementation mechanisms. Additionally, the parties will collaborate on building the program’s business model.
