Egypt to Sign Agreements for Cyprus’ Aphrodite Gas Field at MOC 2026

Egypt is expected to sign agreements related to Cyprus’ Aphrodite gas field during the Mediterranean Offshore Conference and Exhibition (MOC 2026), scheduled for October 20-22 in Alexandria, according to the event’s agenda. MOC will be inaugurated by Karim Badwi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, on October 20.

The agreements will involve US Chevron, the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), according to the event’s agenda. It includes a Fiscal Regime Agreement (FRA), a Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement (GSPA), and a Gas Transportation Agreement (GTA).

Cyprus plans to connect Aphrodite to Egypt through a 280-kilometer subsea pipeline, transporting gas to Egypt’s infrastructure for processing and re-export through its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities to international markets.

Earlier in October, Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and senior executives from Chevron met in Athens to review the final steps required to connect the Aphrodite field to Egypt’s infrastructure, paving the way for a final investment decision (FID) and project implementation.

MOC will gather over 28 local and international companies, government officials, and industry experts to focus on Mediterranean energy and carry the theme “Egypt as a key pillar for securing energy security in the Mediterranean region.”

Among the governmental companies, the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) will take part in energy discussions during the conference. Salah Abdel Kerim, CEO of EGPC, will participate in a session on energy transition projects and low-carbon energy systems and their role in strengthening energy security and attracting investment.

Abdel Kerim will also participate in a panel discussion in the technical conference about building the national energy supply chain through innovation, manufacturing, and local technology development. The session will examine what manufacturers need from operating companies, EGPC, and government entities to invest with confidence.

In addition, Amal Tantawy, EGPC’s Chief Executive for Financial and Economic Affairs, will participate in a session on developing financing mechanisms for oil and gas projects in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Moreover, Tamer Edrees, Deputy CEO for Production at EGPC, will join a session discussing gas supplies to various industries, infrastructure and supply chain development, and maximizing the utilization of associated gas instead of flaring it.

The conference will feature around 20 technical sessions covering 84 research papers from 27 countries. Topics will include increasing production from mature fields, maximizing the use of modern technologies, and applying artificial intelligence in the petroleum industry.

The event will also host a student panel discussion titled “From Today’s Students to Tomorrow’s Energy Leaders – Empowering the Future,” with the participation of Egypt’s seven Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) student chapters. The session aims to explore the skills and opportunities needed to prepare the next generation of energy industry professionals.
