Egypt, Germany Explore Partnership in Natural Gas, Hydrogen, Carbon Storage

On the sidelines of his participation in CERAWeek 2025, held from March 10-14, 2025, in the USA, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi held a meeting with Director General for Economic Policy in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and Ministry Coordinator for Sustainable Development.

The meeting addressed ways to enhance cooperation to achieve energy security in both countries. Discussions focused on the German side’s potential purchase of Cypriot gas within the framework of the recently concluded agreement between Egypt and Cyprus to transport gas produced from Cypriot fields to Egypt via Egyptian liquefaction facilities.

Discussions also included the Egyptian side’s potential utilization of Germany’s surplus regasification capacities by leasing one of the floating regasification units currently operating in Mukran Port on the German Baltic Sea. The two sides agreed to arrange a visit by a delegation of Egyptian specialists to Germany by the end of this month to finalize the contractual terms for the unit’s utilization.

The two sides also addressed cooperation in the field of hydrogen and ways to transfer expertise and technology, given Germany’s extensive experience in implementing hydrogen projects and Egypt’s promising potential in the production and generation of green hydrogen.

The two sides also discussed ways of cooperation in the field of carbon storage, trade, and exchange. They also reviewed the standards and regulations governing the operation of carbon markets.
