Badawi Reviews Progress in Abu Tartour Phosphoric Acid Project

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, met with shareholders of Abu Tartour for Phosphoric Acid Company (AT-PHOS) to review the progress and latest developments in the phosphoric acid production project at the Abu Tartour phosphate mine in the New Valley Governorate, Western Desert.

During the meeting, the minister highlighted the importance of the project, which aims to enhance the added value of mineral ores by using it in local production rather than exporting them as raw material.

Badawi noted the project represents a prominent model of integration between the government and private sector in implementing industrial and mining projects with significant economic returns, contributing to Egypt’s industrial transformation plan and increasing the added value of its resources.

Given the strategic importance of phosphoric acid in chemical industries, the project is expected to reduce imports and boost export opportunities, according to the Ministry’s Statement on Thursday.

During the meeting, company officials reviewed a detailed execution plan, outlining the two-phase development of the project, with each phase targeting an annual production capacity of 250,000 tons.

The first phase is estimated to cost $573 million, with construction set to begin early 2026 and commercial operations expected by 2028.The final contracts for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) are scheduled to be signed this month, marking the official start of implementation.

Badawi  emphasized that the Abu Tartur project exemplifies Egypt’s commitment to building a competitive economy based on manufacturing and maximizing value-added.

The project is a joint venture between Misr Phosphate Company, Chemical Industries Holding Company, Engineering for the Petroleum and Process Industries (ENPPI), Petroleum Projects and Technical Consultations Company (PETROJET), East Gas Company, Abu Qir Fertilizers Company, National Investment Bank, Al Ahly Capital Holding Company, El Wady for Phosphate Industries and Fertilizers (WAPHCO), and Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA).
