The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), the state-owned power grid operator, signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Alcazar Energy to construct a 407-megawatt (MW) wind power plant in the Zafarana region.

The agreement was signed by Mona Rezk, Chairwoman of the EETC, and Mohamed Zidan, Senior Director of Alcazar Energy in Egypt, a sustainable infrastructure fund focused on utility-scale renewable energy projects in emerging markets, with an advisory team based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The plant is projected to supply clean electricity to around 775,000 households and significantly reduce carbon emissions, with operations scheduled to commence in 2028, according to EETC’s release.

Rezk emphasized the project’s importance as part of the company’s plans to upgrade the national unified grid, noting that these efforts aim to accommodate expanding renewable energy capacities and ensure their efficient, safe transmission to load centers across the country.

She stressed that collaborating with the private sector remains a primary pillar for achieving Egypt’s renewable energy goals and bolstering national energy security.

Egypt has updated its Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES) to target 45% of its generation capacity from renewable sources by 2030, moving the timeline forward from its previous 2035 target.

Alcazar Energy’s $420 million signed a deal earlier this year to operate, manage, maintain, and upgrade the 580-MW Gabal El-Zeit wind farm on the Red Sea. The project forms part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand private-sector participation in the renewable energy sector and accelerate its clean energy transition.
