During his visit to Jordan, Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), met with Abdel Wahab Al-Rowad, CEO of the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC).
Also present were Yasser Salah El-Din, CEO of the Jordanian Egyptian Fajr for Natural Gas Transmission and Supply, and Mohamed El-Bagoury Head of the Central Administration for Legal Affairs at MoPMR.
The meeting focused on cooperation and the exchange of expertise in the utilization of raw phosphate and the development of downstream mining industries, particularly the phosphate fertilizer sector. Both countries have untapped phosphate reserves, offering new opportunities for partnerships.
Badawi highlighted Egypt’s strategy to maximize value from phosphate ore by expanding manufacturing industries, particularly the production of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid. This strategy supports national targets to increase the mining sector’s contribution to economic growth by enhancing its competitiveness and appeal to both local and foreign investors.
The minister said ongoing reforms in the mining sector, including legislative developments and improvements to the investment climate, aim to establish integrated industrial projects that generate greater economic value.
Egypt, with 2.8 billion tons of phosphate reserves (the world’s third-largest), has major deposits in the Red Sea and New Valley regions, including 1 billion tons at Abu Tartour. The government is pursuing value-added processing through large-scale projects such as the Abu Tartour Phosphoric Acid Complex, a 450,000-ton-per-year facility now in its implementation phase, and a $1 billion integrated complex in Ain Sokhna, which will produce 300,000 tons per year each of phosphoric acid and DAP/TSP fertilizers.
This visit marks Badawi’s first trip to Jordan this year to discuss collaboration. Earlier in 2026, he visited the UAE for an official visit, where he toured ENPPI and PETROJET project sites in Habshan and met with Egyptian teams working on major energy and oilfield infrastructure projects. Badawi also traveled to Saudi Arabia to participate in the Future Minerals Forum, where he met with international and regional mining leaders to discuss cooperation and promote investment opportunities in Egypt.
