Badawi Receives Egypt’s Second FSRU

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, accompanied by leaders from the Ministry and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), witnessed the arrival of a new Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) for receiving imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and converting it back to its gaseous state, in preparation for pumping it into the national natural gas grid.

The southern berth at the Tahya Misr station in Alexandria Seaport welcomed the Energos Power FSRU, arriving from Germany.

The minister emphasized that the arrival of the new FSRU is part of the ministry’s plan to secure the necessary natural gas supplies for power plants during the summer. This is part of a comprehensive package of integrated measures being implemented by the government to ensure the stability of power generation during the hot summer months.

Badawi indicated that obtaining this new FSRU, which is currently the second of its kind, was the result of discussions held with the German government in both Cairo and Berlin during his last visit in March, where they discussed leasing the vessel for operation in Egypt.

The minister clarified that the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources continues to bolster the infrastructure for receiving imported LNG. The system has been enhanced with the new vessel, serving as the second FSRU to be leased by Egypt , alongside the existing vessel at the SUMED port in Ain Sokhna. Additionally, through EGAS, agreements have been made to lease two more vessels that will arrive sequentially, bringing the total to four ships. This will contribute to increasing the efficiency and flexibility of the natural gas supply system for the local market, and its ability to meet increasing demand, especially during the summer months.

Egypt began importing LNG in 2024, leasing its first FSRU, Höegh Galleon, from Norwegian Höegh LNG in May 2024. The vessel was stationed in Egypt from June 2024 to February 2026 before being scheduled for deployment to Australia’s Port Kembla.
