Badawi Pushes Legislation Reforms to Transform Oil, Gas, Mining Sectors

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi said that enhancing cooperation with the House of Representatives and its committees, especially those concerned with energy, environment, and industry, is key to building a legislative framework that supports investment in Egypt’s oil, gas, and mining sectors, which fosters the national economy and reduces the import bill.

This was mentioned in a joint meeting held by the Minister with the Energy, Environment, and Industry Committees of the House of Representatives, in the presence of Mahmoud Fawzy, Minister of Parliamentary and Legal Affairs and Political Communication, along with several other leaders.

During the meeting, Badawi reviewed six main pillars of the Ministry’s strategy: intensifying exploration and development to increase production; maximizing the use of the main infrastructure in the refining and petrochemical sectors; developing the mining sector and transforming the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA) into an economic entity; restructuring Egypt’s energy mix by expanding renewables to 42% by 2030; investing in human capital and promoting green energy projects; and strengthening regional cooperation to position Egypt as an energy hub.

For his part, Fawzy praised the Minister’s cooperative approach with state institutions, noting it was reflected in the unanimous preliminary approval of the draft amendments to the Mineral Resources Law.

Badawi concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of the continued coordination with members of the House of Representatives and supporting all efforts to enhance the role of the petroleum and mining sectors in serving the national economy and meeting citizens’ needs for petroleum products and natural gas.
