A fire broke out aboard a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU)  and a storage vessel at Damietta Port, prompting an immediate emergency response, according to a statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The ministry said: “The incident was addressed immediately in line with approved emergency and rapid-response plans, with specialized authorities, firefighting teams, and on-site security units deployed to contain the situation”. The statement did not mention the cause of the fire.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi traveled to the site shortly after the incident was reported to personally monitor developments, oversee containment and safety operations, and ensure that all safety measures and coordination procedures were being fully implemented among the relevant agencies.

According to the ministry, the fire has been brought under control, and no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

While the MoPMR’s statement didn’t mention the name of the FSRU , there is only one in Damietta port, Energos Winter, which docked at the port in October. In July 2025, Egypt has chartered the FSRU for five years to convert the imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) back into gas to feed into Egypt’s national grid.

The vessel holds a regasification capacity of 450 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d).
