Badawi Confirms Egypt’s Gas, Fuel Supplies Fully Secured After Damietta Port Fires

Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), visited the National Control Center for Egypt’s National Natural Gas Grid at GASCO to check on the stability of the network’s operations. He confirmed that natural gas and fuel supplies to power plants and all sectors are secure.

Badawi also reviewed the plan to meet local market needs in August and examined the implementation status of various operating scenarios.

Badawi emphasized that the stability achieved in the supply system reflects the success of the early preparations and proactive scenarios developed before the summer season, stressing full coordination between MoPMR and the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

He said the preparatory emergency plans, proactive scenarios, and operational alternatives prepared proved effective in responding immediately to the fires, ensuring the continued availability of gas and fuel supplies for the country and maintaining stable electricity generation and supply across all sectors.

He added that the ministry continues to monitor all components of the supply system around the clock.

On July 29, a fire broke out involving a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and a storage vessel at Damietta Port. The following day, the Cabinet reviewed the incident and preliminary findings. The initial inquiry indicated that a drone was responsible for the fire. Madbouly emphasized restoring normal operations at Damietta Port and ensuring uninterrupted services, with ministries coordinating efforts to contain the fire and resume activities.

The incident drew attention because the affected vessel is understood to be the Energos Winter, the only FSRU currently operating at Damietta Port. The vessel can re-gasify up to 450 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, enabling imported LNG to be fed directly into the national gas grid.
