Algeria has decided to begin supplying Lebanon with fuel for its power plants to address the immediate shortage after Lebanon’s electricity company Electricité du Liban (EDL) said the day before its supplies were exhausted.
The EDL on Saturday announced a complete nationwide power outage, leading to a critical situation where essential facilities, such as the airport, were affected.
The company said then power supply would resume gradually once new fuel supplies were secured, either through a swap agreement with Iraq or other sources.
Lebanon has been struggling with power shortages for decades, and cash transfer to EDL to cover losses have contributed tens of billions of dollars have to the country’s massive public debt, according to Reuters.
