Voltalia Secures Cabinet Approval for 869 MW Wind Power Project

During its weekly meeting, the Cabinet approved the implementation of an about 869-megawatt (MW) wind power project by the international renewable energy company, Voltalia, according to a Cabinet statement.

The project will be developed on land allocated by the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA). Under the agreement, Voltalia will invest $53 million and is committed to starting the project’s commercial operation by December 2028. The company will also proceed with all necessary procedures and implementation steps to ensure the project’s timely execution.

Voltalia has been present in Egypt since 2017 and has recently pursued major renewable energy projects with TAQA Arabia, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed to repower the ageing Zafarana wind farm with a 3.2 GW wind-solar power plant (1.1 GW wind + 2.1 GW solar) expected to be first commissioned in 2028. In July 2024, they also signed a framework agreement for a green hydrogen cluster at Ain Sokhna involving a 500 MW electrolyzer powered by 1.3 GW of solar and wind capacity, with total investment up to $3.4 billion and two phases each producing 350,000 tons of green ammonia annually (t/y).
