Venture Global, a US liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer, has signed a new 20-year Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with China Gas Holdings Limited, a major Chinese natural gas operator, for the supply of 0.5 million tons per annum (mtpa) of US LNG starting in 2030, according to a statement released by Venture Global.
The agreement was announced ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to Washington later this month, according to Reuters.
The agreement brings Venture Global’s total long-term LNG offtake commitments with China Gas to 2.5 mtpa under 20-year SPAs, with volumes supplied across Venture Global’s LNG portfolio.
China halted US LNG imports in 2025 amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, with tariffs and broader US-China trade measures disrupting energy flows between the two countries. The move temporarily halted US LNG deliveries to China, one of the world’s largest LNG importers.
According to tracking data compiled by shipping and trade monitors, US LNG shipments to China fell by 71.7% year-over-year to just 0.1 million tonnes during the first seven months of 2026. This left the US accounting for a mere 0.2% of China’s total LNG imports over that period.
