Nigerian Environmental Group Condemns Shell’s Poor Response to Oil Spill

Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) organization has condemned what it called a slow response of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to the oil spill incident of July 2015 at its Adibawa Oil field in Eastern Edagberi Community, Daily Post Nigeria reported.

In its report on the situation, ERA regretted that more than six months after the oil leak incident was reported in the Eastern Niger Delta, oil recovery was yet to be completed, exposing the environment to continued pollution by spilled crude. It also stated that residents of the affected communities were seeking the intervention of the state and the federal government to save their environment from further degradation and called on Shell to expedite the cleaning, Nigerian Obsever wrote.

At the time of the incident in July, SPDC claimed that the oil leakage at Adibawa Well 8, had been caused by vandals and thieves, according to earlier reports by Nigerian Observer. SPDC also alleged that the host community was thwarting the efforts of the oil firm to contain the leakage, which leaders of the Edagberi Community denied.
