Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi conducted a tour of the Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) complex, where he reviewed the latest developments at the plant, including the implementation of safety measures and advancements in green production initiatives.
The Chairman of the company Ahmed Mahmoud stated that the the company succeeded in reducing emissions estimated at about 25,000 tons annually and rationalizing energy consumption by 2% and water by 10%, elaborating that it plans to develop and raise the efficiency of factories and increase production capacity while reducing the carbon footprint and shifting to green production, which enhances the company’s competitiveness in European markets that will implement new requirements starting next year to support the supply of low-carbon products.
He added that MOPCO achieved more than 19 million safe working hours without injuries since 2018 until now, including more than 4 million safe working hours in 2024.
The chairman said that MOPCO is the first company to implement the self-environmental monitoring system for chimneys, and owns the ZLD unit to protect the environment from industrial wastewater by reprocessing and reusing, and aims next year to expand the solar energy capacity in its buildings to 4 megawatts.
Mahmoud also reviewed the company’s productive role and its vision for implementing development and green transformation. He pointed out that the company’s exploitation of natural gas to increase its production has a great return on the Egyptian economy in terms of providing a ton of fertilizers at a cost much lower than imports and achieving dollar income from exports.
Additionally, he noted to the success of MOPCO in adding a new product after completing the its latest production unit for the urea solution ADBlue with a concentration of 32.5% and a capacity of 20,000 tons annually, which is in increasing global demand for its use in reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines.
For his part, Badawi stressed on the importance of applying the highest standards of health, safety and environment (HSE) measures as well as reducing emissions among petrochemicals production
The Minister pointed out that the ongoing integrated work with the Ministry of Electricity to increase the use of renewable energy and form the optimal energy mix will have a positive impact on Egypt’s ambition to be a regional center for green energy, as well as on the fertilizer and petrochemical industry.
Badawi highlighted the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) full support for MOPCO in its investment and expansion plans and helping it overcome obstacles, in addition to supporting it in opening new markets abroad to export its products.
During the meeting, the Minister directed the rapid study of various economic alternatives and solutions to ensure maximizing the benefit from the infrastructure and production capacities of the MOPCO complex to achieve more benefits and economic returns for the country.
