Iraq Launches First Northern Exploration Well Since 1978, Targets 4.3 MMbbl/d

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has launched drilling operations for a new exploratory well in the northern provinces, marking the first exploration activity in the region since 1978, as part of efforts to expand the country’s hydrocarbon reserves.

The ministry stated that the project aims to unlock new oil and gas resources and strengthen upstream activities, particularly in underexplored areas in northern Iraq. The move comes as part of broader plans to boost reserves and enhance production capacity.

In parallel, the Ministry reaffirmed its ambition to increase crude oil production to 4.3 million barrels per day (mmbbl/d) in the near term, as part of a wider strategy to maximize output and support economic growth.

Officials highlighted that achieving this target will rely on intensified exploration campaigns, development of existing fields, and the adoption of advanced technologies to improve recovery rates.

Iraq, one of the largest oil producers within OPEC, has been working to expand its upstream sector through increased drilling activities and investment in both mature and untapped fields.

The latest drilling initiative reflects the government’s commitment to revitalizing exploration in northern regions, which have historically faced operational and security challenges, while contributing to the country’s long-term production growth plans.
