MEDITERRANEAN SEA, ISRAEL – FEBRUARY 2013: In this handout image provided by Albatross, The Tamar drilling natural gas production platform is seen some 25 kilometers West of the Ashkelon shore in February 2013 in Israel. The offshore Tamar drilling site which was originally dispatched from a shipyard in Texas at the end of last year is due to start producing natural gas next week. Over the past few years Israel has suffered from a shortage in natural gas, but with the new platform that weighs 34,000 tons and will be mainly operated by Israelis, the US company Nobel Energy which owns a 36% stake in Tamar, hopes to change Israel’s energy situation as well as the economy as a whole. The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources aims to increase natural gas production to 6.4 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) by mid-2018, Al Borsa reports.

The ministry plans to add 750 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d) from  the Zohr field and 100 mcf/d from the Nooros field to current production, which stands at 5.5 bcf/d, sources at the ministry said.

Experimental operations are set to begin at the Zohr field this week, they added.

The ministry has already begun testing the pipes and the onshore treatment plant, Egypt Oil & Gas previously reported.

The field is expected to come online this month with an initial rate of production of 350 mcf/d.
