Egypt’s Power plants’ consumption of natural gas increased to 3.4bcf/d over one week in mid July, up from 3.3bcf/d, due to the country’s high summer temperatures, according to Mena Fn. Temperatures across Egypt’s different governorates remained mostly unvaried, however, governorates in Upper Egypt were forecast to struggle with the highest temperatures ranging from 40 to 44 degrees, as Ahram Online reported in June 2016.

Daily News Egypt wrote that according to a source at the Ministry of Petroleum, the power plants receive a daily volume of 30,000 tons of fuel oil and 4,000 tons of diesel. Gas imports, through the two floating natural gas import terminals at the Ain Sokhna Port and the Jordan gas line, have increased to reach their maximum capacity of 1.3bcf/d; 1.2bcf/d come from the terminal at Ain Sokhna and 100mcf/d from the Aqaba Port in Jordan.

Furthermore, the source mentioned that even though the Ministry of Petroleum along with the Ministry of Electricity have agreed on providing 3.9bcf/d of gas to run power plants in August, the domestic production of gas has increased from the agreed upon volume to 3.95bcf/d.

Egypt aims to avoid cutting any energy supplies for factories of all consumption rates, and meet its local market needs for natural gas during the high fuel-consuming summer season.
