Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, met with a delegation from UAE-based Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), led by CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, to discuss strengthening cooperation and accelerating the implementation of the company’s renewable energy projects in Egypt, according to a statement by the Cabinet.
The meeting focused on enhancing the partnership in electricity and renewable energy as part of Egypt’s energy transition plans and national energy strategy. Discussions covered efforts to diversify electricity generation sources, expand renewable energy capacity, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Esmat reviewed the latest developments in Masdar’s projects, including solar and wind power plants as well as battery energy storage systems (BESS). The meeting also addressed measures to accelerate project execution and grid connection, in line with Egypt’s plan to add new generation capacities and increase the contribution of renewable energy to the electricity mix.
The minister followed up on the progress of the wind power project in the Gulf of Suez, which is scheduled to be connected to the national electricity grid in December 2026. In November 2022, a consortium of Infinity Power, Hassan Allam, and Masdar signed a framework agreement with leading Egyptian state-backed organizations for the development of a 2 gigawatt (GW) green program in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE).
The discussions also covered projects being developed by the consortium, including a 1,000 MW wind project in Ras Ghareb, a 1,000 MW solar project in Minya, and 600 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage capacity.
In addition, the consortium is developing a 200 MW solar power project in Benban, supported by 120 MWh of battery storage, with grid connection scheduled by the end of 2026. Moreover, In September 2020, Masdar acquired German’s renewable energy company ib vogt stake in the 64.1 Megawatt Peak (MWp) Infinity 50 solar photovoltaic project in Egypt’s Benban Solar Park.
Esmat said that meetings with companies active in renewable energy form part of the government’s efforts to advance Egypt’s energy transition and increase reliance on clean and sustainable energy sources.
He added that the ministry is working to add renewable generation capacity alongside connected and standalone energy storage systems, supporting the government’s objective of reducing fossil fuel consumption, strengthening electricity supply, and maintaining grid stability.
Esmat highlighted Egypt’s national target of increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to 45% by 2028, with the private sector—both domestic and international—playing a key role in achieving this target.
He described Masdar as a “partner in success,” praising the company’s cooperation and its role in supporting Egypt’s renewable energy ambitions.
