Egypt Approves Waste-to-Energy Tariffs

The Egyptian Cabinet of Ministers approved the waste-to-energy feed-in tariffs pricing recommended by the ministerial committee assigned to study projects for energy production from agricultural, solid, and communal wastes.

The tariff is estimated to amount to EGP 0.92/1kW, from which the government would be subsiding EGP 0.42 /1kW.

A governmental spokesman stated to Al Borsa News that the committee suggested connecting the tariff to USD to avoid loss and to encourage investors to put their money in recycling schemes in the country to produce energy.

Meanwhile, five companies are reported to have requested licenses from the Ministry of Environment to establish waste recycling alternative power plants.
