EGAS, MEDREG Discuss Gas Sector Reform

The association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG) stated it was committed to supporting the development of competitive and transparent gas market in Egypt as the country has been facing major challenges, and long term solutions for the gas sector reform are to be implemented, wrote EU Neighborhood Info Center.

At an April workshop in Cairo organized by the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). MEDREG noted that it would assist Egypt in restructuring of the gas market and adopting a new regulatory framework in line with its strategy for 2020-2030.

At the workshop, MEDREG and EGAS identified a set of actions in support of gas regulatory reforms, including the setting up of an independent regulator.

MEDREG promotes a transparent, stable and harmonized regulatory framework in the Mediterranean region, fostering market integration and infrastructure investments, as well as aiming to protect consumers and enhance energy cooperation.

According to ANSA MED, MEDREG President, Eng. HatemWaheed, chaired the workshop confirming the commitment to assist the new Egyptian gas regulator through training, capacity building activities, and with the initial drafting of Egyptian secondary legislation for the gas sector.
