China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec), the largest integrated energy and chemical company in China, held a ceremony on October 25 for the official launch of its WE17 brand and Sustainable Development report in Africa (2021-2025) at the Cairo Marriott Hotel.
The event was attended by energy industry leaders and government officials to celebrate this launch and review the report, which focuses on Sinopec’s practices in fulfilling its economic, environmental, and social responsibilities in Africa, as well as its progress in promoting sustainable development.
“Today, we are releasing this report prepared with reference to the [Global Reporting Initiative] GRI standard. It gives a full picture of Sinopec’s responsible practice in Africa. We have five dimensions: win-win cooperation, harmonious coexistence, joint talent cultivation, joint cultural prosperity, and happiness shared,” said Wei Dong, Managing Director of Sinopec Africa Office.
The event also featured the launch of the WE17 “Clean Energy, Better Life” initiative, which focuses on three main core values: green and clean development, care for people, and cultural exchange among civilizations.
“Fully aligned with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, WE17 serves as a unified platform for Sinopec to engage with the world, providing a clear brand platform for our efforts to fulfill our responsibility in Africa,” said Dong.
From 2021 to 2025, Sinopec, with its cooperation partners, boosted Africa’s oil and gas production and carried out petroleum engineering services, refining and petrochemical engineering, and infrastructure construction businesses across 16 African countries.
According to the report, the company has made a cumulative investment exceeding $5.7 billion in the past five years. Its total tax payments and social responsibility contributions on the continent exceeded $4 billion, directly creating 16,000 local jobs.
“Sinopec has always been an active participant in the social and charity activities of the [Egypt-China Friendship] association, which contributes to the social and people-to-people relations between Egypt and China. As a former ambassador to China, I believe that Sinopec has built a world-class Chinese brand combining professional management, operational capabilities, business outlook and responsibility,” said Magdy Amer, Board Member of the Egypt-China Friendship Association, Former Egyptian Ambassador to China.
Zhao Liuqing, Minister Counselor (Economic and Commercial Affairs) of the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, reiterated Amer’s remarks, stating, “As a major power in Africa and the Arab world, Egypt serves as a crucial fulcrum for practical cooperation between China and Africa, as well as between China and the Arab world.”
As of December 2025, Sinopec has implemented 33 projects across 16 African countries, including Egypt, Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Gabon, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Djibouti, Senegal, Chad, Ghana, and Congo.
In Egypt, Sinopec has engaged in close collaboration with partners such as the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), the Egyptian General and Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), and Apache Corporation.
“Sustainability is not something any company achieves alone. It requires collaboration between operators, investors, governments, communities, and industry partners working toward common goals,” said Greg McDaniel, Senior Vice President of Apache Corporation.
He noted that Egypt’s growing economy requires affordable and reliable energy. The country has established ambitious objectives around emissions reductions, energy efficiency, and sustainable development.
“Over the past seven years, our partnership [Apache-Sinopec] has focused on achieving measurable sustainability outcomes through three key areas: reducing our emissions, improving our operational efficiency, and supporting the communities in which we work and live.”
During the event, Wei Dong presented the sustainability report in Africa, showcasing the company’s operations through the five dimensions.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Africa diplomatic relationship. Sinopec has been involved in the African market for the last 30 years, focusing on investing in oil and gas resources; petroleum engineering and technical services; refining and chemical engineering services; and trading in energy and chemical products.
