Iraq’s Ministry of Oil highlighted that the Kirkuk Fields Development Project will raise oil and gas production and curb flaring through effective investment, with the Ministry noting that it will also revive economic activity in the surrounding areas.

The first meeting of the Joint Management Committee for the project, led by bp, was recently held to kick off the program. The meeting was chaired by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Extraction Affairs, Bassem Mohammed Khudair, and attended by officials from bp. They discussed the development program and plans for the four fields: Jambur, Bai Hassan, Kirkuk, and Khabbaz.

The launch follows bp receiving final government ratification for its contract to redevelop the Kirkuk oil fields in the north of Iraq in March 2025.

bp has been a key player in Iraq’s energy sector since  2009. The company currently operates primarily in the Rumaila oil field in southern Iraq, one of the world’s largest producing fields, under a technical service contract with Iraq’s state-owned Basra Oil Company (BOC) and PetroChina.
