An Iranian nuclear negotiator says the Islamic Republic seeks a “good” deal with the P5+1 countries over Iran’s nuclear program, stressing, however, that Tehran will not cave in to any excessive demands by the opposite side.

“We are after a good agreement, but will under no circumstance give in to excessive demands by the opposite side,” Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi said.

Takht-e-Ravanchi, who is the Iranian deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs, made the remarks in a meeting with Director General of Foreign Policy of Chile, Alfredo Labbé Villa, in Tehran on Monday.

The Chilean official reaffirmed his government’s support for Iran’s nuclear talks as well as the mutual understanding reached between Tehran and its negotiating partners in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.

He also backed Iran’s right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and hoped for a conclusion of a final deal over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Iran and the P5+1 countries are seeking to finalize a comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear program based on the Lausanne statement by the end of June.

Negotiators from Iran and the six countries ended their latest round of talks on drafting the text of a final nuclear deal in the Austrian city of Vienna on May 16. The two sides are now scheduled to hold a new round of negotiations in Vienna on Wednesday.

Iran says the parameters agreed upon by the two sides in Lausanne constitute the basis for drafting a final deal.

“Iran will brook no excessive demands. The agreed parameters are those confirmed by the two sides in Lausanne and these parameters need to be stipulated in a written agreement by Iran and the P5+1,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on May 11.
