In Response to Israel Attacks on Iran, Egypt Activates Emergency Plan for Natural Gas Allocations

In response to Israeli strikes on nuclear targets in Iran, which have heightened political tension in the region, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) has activated a pre-prepared emergency plan to prioritize natural gas allocations

This plan includes halting natural gas supplies to some industries, increasing diesel consumption by power plants to the maximum level and coordinating the operation of some stations to run on diesel, according to a statement by the MoPMR.

According to Reuters, some Egyptian Fertilizer companies had to stop production on Friday due to the expected drop in natural gas supplies after major Israeli gas fields suspended operations following Israel’s military strikes on Iran.

This was a precautionary measure to preserve the stability of the natural gas network and prevent the need to reduce the electricity grid load.

The MoPMR affirmed that three regasification units have arrived in Egypt, noting that one of them is currently pumping gas into the national natural gas grid, while the other two vessels are being equipped and connected to the ports to begin working.

The natural gas network operations room continues to follow up on the situation 24 hours a day, ensuring the stability of the gas grid as well as diesel reserves. The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat along with the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, visited the National Gas Control Center to review the latest developments in the activation of the emergency plan.

Badawi also visited Sokhna Port to expedite the connection of the third regasification unit to the national natural gas grid.
