Eni has announced a “giant natural gas discovery” offshore Mozambique at the Mamba South 1 prospect in Offshore Area 4. The discovery well found 212 m (695 ft) of continuous gas play in Oligocene sands.
Mamba South 1 is in 1,585 m (5,200 ft) of water about 40 km (25 mi) off Cabo Delgado.
After completion and testing, the rig will move to drill Mamba North 1.
Eni is the operator of Offshore Area 4 with a 70% participating interest. Co-owners are Galp Energia (10%), KOGAS (10%), and ENH (10%, carried through the exploration phase).
Anadarko also has success finding natural gas offshore Mozambique. Its most recent appraisal well in Offshore Area 1 found 240 ft (73 m) of continuous gas play.
Even before reporting its most recent find, Anadarko had contracted Technip and KBR for pre-front-end engineering and design studies for an LNG facility near the border with Tanzania.
