Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, met with Sharif Salim Al-Olama, the UAE Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs in the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, to discuss enhancing partnership and exchanging expertise between the two sides in areas of mutual interest.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to share and exchange energy efficiency and conservation knowledge, under the framework of the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA), launched by the UAE and includes around 40 member countries, with Egypt being among them.
The alliance supports funding and technological solutions, as well as promotes partnerships among member countries, technology providers, and financial institutions. It helps implement projects that improve energy efficiency, reduce consumption, and cut carbon emissions. The platform for the alliance is expected to be launched by the end of next month, said the ministry on Thursday.
The discussions further covered the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in energy management systems to preserve national resources, direct them toward value-added industries, and support environmental sustainability.
The meeting also addressed opportunities for knowledge exchange in the exploration and production of unconventional oil and gas resources–an area that the Egyptian petroleum sector is increasingly focusing on.
Additionally, the meeting reviewed Egypt’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production project, implemented by the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM). The project utilizes used cooking oil as feedstock, in alignment with international civil aviation standards. The project aims to meet the local demand expected for this type of green fuel over the next few years. It also opens new horizons for export to foreign markets, capitalizing on the growing global demand, especially with the petroleum sector having the technical and logistical components needed for success.
