Egypt, Saudi Interconnection Project on Track

Domestic political events in Saudi Arabia will not impact the Egypt-Saudi Arabia Interconnection Project, Ayman Hamza, Spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, told Al Mal News.

The project is proceeding according to schedule, Hamza noted, adding that work on a number of linking stations has already begun. He said that the connection should be operational in 2020.

GE recently completed a substation in Badr City in support of the project, Egypt Oil & Gas reported. Upon completion, a transmission line will stretch 1,300 kilometers from Badr City in Egypt to Medina and Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, allowing the countries to exchange up to 3.0 GW of electricity.

In May, Arab Finance  reported that the pilot operations would begin in 2019.
