Egypt and Norway have agreed to work on a five-year strategic cooperation plan covering green energy, carbon reduction, and natural gas exploration. This came during a meeting between Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Erik Husem, the Norwegian Ambassador, to bolster strategic partnership in the energy sector
During the meeting, the minister noted that Egypt’s petroleum sector places carbon removal projects among its strategic priorities, given the country’s infrastructure, natural reservoirs, and regulatory and legislative efforts that enable the application of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. These measures contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian exports to European markets, in line with the global shift toward a low‑carbon economy.
Ambassador Husem commended the successful operational model demonstrated by the Norwegian Scatec in Egypt’s green hydrogen and green ammonia sectors. Specifically, he highlighted the ongoing partnership between Scatec, Yara International, and Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) for the green ammonia project in Damietta.
The Damietta project, signed in 2024, has a production capacity of 150,000 tons per year (t/y) of green ammonia. The facility will be powered by 480 megawatts of renewable energy generated from wind and solar sources. MOPCO holds a 25% share in the project alongside Scatec and the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM).
