Egyptian Companies Discuss Natural Gas Projects in Iraq

Modern Gas, an Egyptian joint stock company with operations in both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the Alexandria Petroleum Maintenance Company (Petromaint), a leading oil and gas service provider in Egypt offering a wide range of expert services, held a meeting with the Iraqi Ministry of Oil. The meeting discussed the prospects of Modern Gas’s participation in natural gas network connection projects for power generation plants, brick factories, and cement plants in Iraq.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of first edition of the Iraq Oil and Gas Technology Exhibition (OiGatech 2025), in the presence of Mohamed Qandil, Modern Gas Chairman and Managing Director, and Ibrahim Motawea, Petromaint Chairman and Managing Director. The Iraqi side was represented by Izzat Saber Ismail, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Gas Affairs.

The two sides explored the possibility of supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to residential areas, towers, and hotels, which would contribute to the optimal utilization of the substantial quantities of available LNG.

These discussions align with the ambitious expansion plan adopted by the Iraqi government to establish residential complexes, aiming to construct one million housing units. This plan involves implementing an underground LNG network system with central stations, encompassing design, installation, operation, and maintenance phases.

The meeting further reviewed avenues for cooperation on flared gas recovery and its repurposing. This is an initiative that brings significant benefits, including environmental protection and reducing carbon emissions, alongside boosting production through the reuse of available resources.

Discussions also covered specialized studies on modernizing, repurposing, and utilizing current and future assets to ensure the highest levels of performance and efficiency. Furthermore, they included studies on the treatment, conditioning, and reuse of industrial and produced water, tailored to the nature and conditions of each site.

It’s worth noting that the Egyptian petroleum sector was named the guest of honor at the current edition of OiGatech 2025. The exhibition was held under the patronage of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, running from June 1 to 4, 2025, and was supervised by the Iraqi Ministry of Oil. It featured broad participation from 66 companies specializing in oil, gas, and energy from around the world.
