Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad, and Mohab Habashi Khalil, Governor of Port Said, attended the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Environment’s Bioenergy Association for Sustainable Development (BASD) and Italian Eni to collaborate in the field of biogas production. The agreement involves conducting a comprehensive feasibility study to establish units to produce biogas from animal and agricultural waste. This step is within the joint efforts to advance the transition toward clean energy and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Minister Karim Badawi emphasized the importance of utilizing this advanced technology across all Egyptian governorates, noting that the petroleum sector is fully prepared to support and contribute to implementing sustainable development projects, particularly biogas units. He added that this support is integral for the petroleum sector’s corporate social responsibility (CSR).
For her part, Minister Manal Awad stated that the move is a major milestone in the Bioenergy Association’s efforts to expand partnerships with the private sector and international institutions to promote the spread of biogas technology nationwide. She noted that the project supports Egypt’s climate and sustainability agenda through eco-friendly energy solutions, reducing emissions, and converting agricultural and animal waste into clean energy that bolsters the rural economy.
Governor Mohab Habashi said that the project will ensure the safe disposal of waste while simultaneously producing renewable energy. He added that the project’s site includes a complex that could accommodate waste from nearly 200 farms.
It is worth mentioning that BASD is a non-profit entity established in 2015 in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) by a decree of the Egyptian Cabinet. It aims to promote biogas technologies in Egypt through technical support and the implementation of model projects in cooperation with local and international organizations.
