Eni Starts Gas Production at Maha Offshore Field in Indonesia

Eni has started gas production at the Maha offshore field in Indonesia, adding capacity of 250 mmcf/d and taking combined output from the Jangkrik floating production unit (FPU) and the South Hub to a plateau of 750 mmcf/d, the Italian energy company said on October 30.

Located in the West Ganal block in the Kutei Basin at a water depth of about 1,000 meters, Maha has two subsea production wells connected to the Jangkrik FPU through about 12 km of flowlines. The project reached start-up 21 months after the final investment decision.

Gas will be processed onboard the FPU before entering the pipeline network, supplying Indonesia’s domestic market and the Bontang liquefaction plant, which serves domestic and international LNG markets.

Maha is part of the South Hub development and is operated by Searah, an upstream joint venture between Eni and Malaysia’s PETRONAS established in June 2026. Its start-up follows the launch of production at Merakes East in May 2025.

Eni said the planned start-up of the Gendalo and Gendang project in 2028 is expected to help sustain the combined production plateau beyond the end of the decade.

The company also took final investment decisions in March 2026 for the North Hub, comprising Geng North and Gehem, and the South Hub developments.

Eni has operated in Indonesia since 2001, focusing on offshore exploration and gas production. Its Indonesian portfolio includes the Jangkrik and Merakes fields and major gas developments in the Kutei Basin.
