Cabinet: Claims of $50m Energos Winter Repair Costs “Unfounded”

The Cabinet has denied reports claiming that Egypt will pay $50 million to repair the Energos Winter floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which was set on fire resulting from a drone attack at Damietta Port in July.

“The cabinet had contacted the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), which confirmed that the reports were fabricated, misleading, and false,” noted a statement published on the cabinet’s social media platforms.

The ministry also stressed that no officials from the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) had made statements containing such information. It added that the claims attributed to an unnamed company official were entirely unfounded.

On July 29, a fire broke out aboard a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and a storage vessel at Damietta Port, prompting an immediate emergency response.

The fire has been brought under control, and no injuries or fatalities have been reported, the petroleum ministry reported back then.

There is only one FSRU in Damietta Port, Energos Winter, which docked at the port in October. In July 2025, Egypt chartered the unit for five years to convert the imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) back into gas to feed into Egypt’s national grid.

The vessel holds a regasification capacity of 450 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d).
