Algeria’s state-owned energy company Sonatrach has exported its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo to Germany, according to the company’s press release on July 8.
The shipment was delivered on July 2, 2026, to the Wilhelmshaven 1 floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Germany. The LNG cargo was loaded at the GL2Z liquefaction complex in Bethioua, Algeria, and transported aboard the Tessala LNG carrier, which is owned by Sonatrach.
Sonatrach said it intends to continue expanding its LNG exports to the German market, strengthening its position as a key supplier while contributing to the security of Europe’s energy supplies.
The first cargo comes as Germany continues to diversify its gas import portfolio following the sharp reduction in Russian pipeline gas supplies in recent years. Since 2022, the country has rapidly expanded its LNG import infrastructure, with floating regasification terminals such as Wilhelmshaven playing a key role in enhancing energy security.
