As part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ (MoPMR) commitment to strengthening occupational safety, health, and environmental performance across Egypt’s energy sector, Yassin Mohamed, First Undersecretary of the Ministry and Supervisor of Environment, Safety and Health, Energy Efficiency, and Climate, held an inspection visit to Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) in Damietta Governorate.
During the visit, Ahmed Mahmoud, Chairman of MOPCO, reviewed the company’s key operations, highlighting its efforts to promote a safety culture, enhance risk management, and comply with environmental conditions. Discussions also covered initiatives to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and boost operational performance in line with international standards for the fertilizer and petrochemical industries.
The visit included discussions for updates on MOPCO’s green production projects, such as the Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) project, which will capture 140,000 tons of CO₂ annually to increase urea fertilizer production, and the green ammonia project, developed in partnership with Scatec, the largest solar developer in Egypt, aiming to produce 150,000 tons per year using renewable energy and green hydrogen.
Mohamed also inspected the company’s ammonia and urea production units, main control center, and ISO/IEC 17025-certified chemical laboratories, which ensure quality control and reliable calibration results.
Within the visit, a field simulation of an ammonia gas leak was carried out to test emergency preparedness. The drill demonstrated the company’s strong response capabilities, using advanced equipment and fire trucks to contain the simulated leak and conduct a successful high-altitude rescue operation, showcasing the skill and readiness of MOPCO’s safety and emergency teams.
In September, Mohamed conducted a visit to Methanex Egypt’s factory in Damietta to check operational processes, control and prevention mechanisms, and the safety systems in place.
