Petroleum, Environment Ministers Review National CCS Development

Minister of  Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, had a joint meeting with Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, to discuss national developments in practices related to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), a process that captures carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industrial facilities before it is released into the atmosphere.

The meeting, attended by senior officials from both ministries and representatives of the Climate Finance Systems Transformation Project, focused on the role of CCS technologies in reducing emissions and contributing to the goals of Egypt’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the National Climate Change Strategy 2050.

Badawi stated that carbon emission reduction is essential for the competitiveness of Egyptian industrial products in global markets, especially in Europe, where the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a tariff paid by EU importers of carbon-intensive products, such as steel and cement, is imminent.

For her part, Minister Fouad said that CCS is one of the climate projects referenced in the NDCs and was spotlighted during COP28. She stressed the importance of conducting environmental impact assessments and awareness campaigns to ensure community engagement and alignment with international best practices.

The meeting witnessed a presentation of a study, prepared by Rehab M. El-Maghraby of Suez University under the Ministry of Environment’s Climate Finance Transformation Project. The study reviewed global CCS projects, outlined implementation mechanisms, and assessed potential environmental risks and suitable mitigation measures.

This meeting marks another step forward in integrated climate action, reinforcing Egypt’s commitment to sustainable development and global climate goals.
