Petrobras and Ecopetrol have confirmed the largest gas discovery in Colombia’s history in the Sirius-2 well, which holds over 6 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas.
This discovery increases Colombia’s current gas reserves by 200%, said Petrobras.
The Sirius-2 well is located in the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block, 77 km from Santa Marta in the Magdalena department. Drilling began on June 19, 2024.
The consortium, led by PIB-COL (44.44% stake) and Ecopetrol (55.56% stake), will start collecting meta-oceanic data for the Production Development Project.
This data, along with environmental information, is crucial for installing a pipeline and production systems on the seabed, Petrobras explained.
The consortium plans to invest $1.2 billion in the exploration phase and $2.9 billion for the production development phase.
Production is expected to start within three years, following environmental approvals and confirmation of commercial viability by 2027.
The project aims to produce about 13 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) of natural gas for 10 years through four producer wells using an innovative “subsea to shore” design.
