MoPMR, SLB Host Carbon Capture Workshop to Enhance Sustainability in Egypt

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), in cooperation with SLB, organized a specialized workshop on carbon capture and storage technologies at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.

It witnessed the participation of experts and specialists from government sectors, global energy companies operating in the petroleum sector in Egypt, and representatives of ERM, a company specializing in environmental consulting.

The workshop aimed to exchange experiences and best practices in light of the global expertise and advanced technologies possessed by SLB and the companies participating in the workshop in this field.

First Undersecretary of the MoPMR and Supervisor of the Environment, Occupational Safety and Health, Energy Efficiency, and Climate portfolio, Alaa El Batal, inaugurated the workshop with a welcoming speech. El Batal praised the continuous cooperation with the Ministry’s partners from global companies such as SLB.

El Batal further pointed to the success of the previous workshop organized in cooperation with SLB last January on reducing methane emissions, emphasizing that these events are part of the core axes of the Ministry’s work and efforts to create an attractive investment environment while enhancing safety standards, improving energy efficiency, and sustainability.

In coordination with the ministries concerned with carbon capture and storage activities, senior officials from the Ministries of Transportation, Industry, and Environment participated in the workshop.

The workshop included a discussion of technical studies related to identifying the best locations for carbon storage, the requirements of Measurement, Monitoring, and Verification (MMV) systems for carbon capture and storage operations, and the various legislative frameworks applied in different countries.

At the conclusion of the workshop, El Batal emphasized the importance of preparing an executive action plan that includes the necessary steps and procedures to establish the appropriate legislative framework for regulating carbon capture and storage activities, thereby paving the way for the implementation of related projects, in cooperation with all relevant authorities.
